Trinity has a long history of being a community actively engaged in “Teaching the Love of Christ.”  Soon after the Civil War, German farmers who had settled in the “Black Oak” area began efforts to have Lutheran worship services one Sunday a month.  In 1874 Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church – the first church in Oak Lawn – was formed.  Church services were held at a public school building until 1881 when the congregation dedicated the first church building, a white frame structure located on the north side of 95th street and Brandt Avenue.  As the church increased in activity and people, it was decided the building could no longer house the growing congregation.  The congregation decided to move south two blocks to a new location on Brandt Avenue.  In 1940, the gothic style limestone church we worship in today was dedicated.  After World War II the Oak Lawn area grew – and so did Trinity.  Over those years we have added to the church structure, the staff, and the programming so that we can house our expanding ministry.  We have proclaimed, celebrated, and shared Christ’s love for over 130 years.

In the 1960’s Trinity brought its first bus to transport youth for trips and activities.  As Youth Ministry expanded, Linda Bensen joined the staff as our parish worker in 1968.  Linda’s ministry over these past 48 plus years has included Luther League, Youth activities, Confirmation, woman’s retreats, Praise Choir, crafters, and travel. Over her years at Trinity, Linda has touched the lives of many people with her gentle love, enthusiasm, and faith.  It is a privilege to have her as a colleague and friend.  Linda’s 48 plus years of ministry with Trinity Lutheran Church have been a blessing to us all.

Over the years, our ways of Teaching the Love of Christ have changed and grown.  Trinity Preschool began in 1984, and under the direction of Cathy Cepican ministers to 60 young people and their families.  Our Sunday school nurtures the faith lives of our children and youth.  The Trinity Women teach Christ’s love through their circles, fellowship events, programs, and retreats.  New opportunities for fellowship for men and younger adults are developing along side of established groups and Seniors programs. We continue to be a very active congregation with a number of organizations and activities.

At the center of our life of Teaching the Love of Christ is the worship of our Lord, Jesus.  We gather to hear the Good News, to receive God’s grace, and reflect Christ’s love in our lives. Like the warmth of our sanctuary, the hearts of Trinity’s people provide a warm welcome to our friends – both old and new – as we gather in Christ’s love.
